Mayor Michael B. Coleman and his wife, Frankie, are ending their 25-year marriage, according to a statement released this morning by his office.
“The mayor and Frankie intend to remain friends and be supportive of their family endeavors,” the statement said.
The statement said family members would not comment further. City officials and friends of the couple had nothing else to say, either, this morning.
Coleman and his wife married in 1984. It was the second marriage for both.They have three adult children.
The Colemans have endured a number of difficulties since the mayor was sworn into office 10 years ago in the Palm Room of the Franklin Park Conservatory, the same spot where they exchanged their wedding vows.
Mrs. Coleman has battled breast cancer and been treated for alcoholism. She was arrested for drunken driving in 2005 and was convicted in 2007 of taking pay for hours not worked at a new state job.
Their home caught fire twice, and one of their sons served in Iraq with an Ohio-based Marine Corps unit that suffered a high number of casualties.
The statement issued by Coleman’s office this morning said the two will remain friends.
“The Coleman family is thankful for the warm support it has received from the community through the many years,” the statement said. “Family members will not be commenting further, and would appreciate respect for their privacy on this matter.
No divorce papers had been filed as of late this morning in the Franklin County Common Pleas Court.
