FLYPAPER OMAG :: FASHION OR FAITH

The ‘Rosary bead chain’ is up for debate

In this day and age crossing fashion with religion is starting to become more and more acceptable. But does that make it right? You have often seen the typical skull on a tee shirt mixed with some unsettling dialogue or phrases such as ‘live or die’ on tees.
For one reason or another it doesn’t seem to faze the consumer, as almost every urban brand displays skulls and controversial sayings in their lines. We’ve all heard the saying ’sex sells’ — now we are forced to ask ourselves: ‘does religion sell?’
I pose this question, because I am starting to see a lot of people wearing ‘rosary beads’ as necklaces. I’m more spiritual than religious, that’s how I have always been; but, I caught myself resisting the temptation to buy one of those ‘rosary bead’ chains one day.
Artist like Jay-Z have been spotted wearing these chains and it makes me ask the question: is this fashion or faith? The cross itself has been branded like some kind of ‘Cool Logo’ throughout the years — on clothes, hats, even as tattoo’s; almost suggesting that no matter what I do as long as I have the cross on me then I’m religious and doing right by the Lord. That’s not the case with a lot of people, but I’m sure they feel that way.
Don’t get me wrong, some people that bare the cross are devoted to Jesus Christ and/or their respective religions. But, for the others that are not, shouldn’t there be some kind of feeling that they are offending people?
The definition of the Rosary (from Latin rosarium, meaning “rose garden”)[1] or “garland of roses”[2] is a popular and traditional Roman Catholic devotion. The term denotes both a set of prayer beads and the devotional prayer itself, which combines vocal (or silent) prayer and meditation. The prayers consist of repeated sequences of the Lord’s Prayer followed by ten prayings of the Hail Mary and a single praying of “Glory Be to the Father”; each of these sequences is known as a decade. The praying of each decade is accompanied by meditation on one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which are events in the lives of Jesus Christ and His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I have talked to a few Pastors and Reverends and when they have seen or even heard about people wearing Rosary beads as jewelry (necklaces mostly), they feel that it very disrespectful to the Catholic religion.
In closing, I only am addressing this topic because of previous situations not to hate on anyone that has one. I almost bought one of these chains, but luckily I thought about the consequences it may cause me — and only me. How would I feel if I was Catholic and someone wearing one of these chains crossed my path? I thought and decided not to. The world is so money-motivated nowadays. Just because it’s for sale, doesn’t make it ok for us (the consumers) to buy it.
This is a very sensitive subject I would love to hear what our readers think — email us theflypaper@gmail.com.
