Illegally Downloading Music? It could cost you

POST by Mila J
A Minnesota woman is going to pay big bucks for music she illegally downloaded—$1.92 million to be exact. A federal jury ruled Thursday that Jammie Thomas-Rasset knowingly violated the copyrights of 24 songs from artists such as Gloria Estefan and No Doubt. The 32-year-old mother of four was charged $80,000 per song, though her attorney noted the songs she downloaded were only 99 cents.
Thomas-Rasset’s case is only one of more than 30,000 similar lawsuits to actually make it to trial. A spokeswoman for the Recording Industry Association of America has said that they’re willing to settle though a figure hasn’t been named. She said Thomas-Rasset was given the opportunity earlier in the case to settle for $3,000 to $5,000.
