I don’t know about you but Germans selling Obama Chicken Fingers doesn’t seem like they are trying to promote “hope”. I do think President Obama has to be the most marketed President of all time but some of this stuff is just rediculous. Check out what we found on EURweb.com.
A German frozen food company says it had no idea that its new product, a fried chicken offering called Obama Fingers, could be viewed as racially offensive.
The frozen food product, described by the company Sprehe as “tender, juicy pieces of chicken breast, coated and fried,” said it is using the U.S. president’s name because he symbolizes hope, and in this struggling economy, hope sells.
“We noticed that American products and the American way of eating are trendy at the moment,” Judith Witting, sales manager for Sprehe, told Spiegel Online. “Americans are more relaxed. Not like us stiff Germans, like (Chancellor Angela) Merkel.”
The idea, she claimed, was to get in on the Obama-mania which continues to grip Germany. The word “fingers” in the name refers to the fact that it is a finger food.
For Americans in Germany, though, a fried chicken product named after the first black president may be racially insensitive, as fried chicken has long been associated with African American stereotypes.
Witting told Spiegel the connection never even occurred to her. “It was supposed to be an homage to the American lifestyle and the new U.S. president,” she said.
