So I’m driving back to Columbus on Saturday afternoon. I’m doing about 80 with my son, my cousin and brother in the car. I know you’re probably thinking why in the hell are you doing 80 miles per hour with your son in the car? Well, I wanted to surprise him and his friends with an unannounced visit to the So So Def vs. Derrty Ent Celebrity Basketball Game. Not because they are Nelly and Bow Wow fans, but because I rarely get to take my son to my events because they are usually at nightclubs and bars. We were running late (you know how picking up all your friends on CP time can set you back like crazy) so I hit the gas so we could make the game. With $100,000 on the line we expected a heated match up.
When we arrived at St. John’s Arena my son instantly figured out what was going on by the enormous Bow Wow billboard wrapped around his tour bus (and the hundreds of young girls running to the building). After our VIP entrance and FlyPaper playcalling session we sat down to enjoy the game and get some great footage. Bow Wow and Nelly were both amped on the court as the teams were warming up.

The game started out like a NBA All Star weekend exhibition game and continued in that fashion for much of the first half. It was a back and forth highlight reel. If you’ve never seen Bow Weezy play you’d be surprised, the young one has skills. Nelly, who has been MVP in many celebrity basketball games, showed them how to drop 3 pointers like rain for most of the game. As a result, Nelly and his Derrty Ent team kept a strong lead for most of both halves. The last quarter of the game would be when all the drama went down.
In an attempt to rep his city, Bow Wow went on a frenzy and closed an 20 point lead within 5 minutes of the last period. The last few minutes of the game were full of excitement as both teams went bucket for bucket. Nelly’s team stayed together and sealed the deal on game one with a score of 107 to 104.
To top off the day, after a last ditch effort to score the win, Bow Wow goes for the half court Hail Mary and misses. But the drama was just beginning. As soon as the buzzer went off hundreds of screaming girls rushed the court and started to claw at Bow Wow like he was Jesus with tattoos. Nelly got the second wave of crazy girls, and a few girls made it JD’s (Jermaine Dupri) way to show him some love (I didn’t even see Murphy Lee after the game). The game was good but the ending was action packed. I have never seen little girls go crazy like that. I know that had to make Bow Wow feel good in a “I still got it” kind of way.
All-in-all my son and I had a ball and the team did a great job covering the game. Check out the video coverage of the game courtesy of FlyPaper TV. Shout to Aaron, Antwan, and the rest of the team from the Ohio Center for Broadcasting. Shout out to Bubba!
