EDDIE MURPHY plays RICHARD PRYOR in movie

Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor

Eddie Murphy hasn’t been the center of attention in Hollywood recently. The Black Hollywood Icon has accomplished so much but has been scrutinized lately for the lull of hilarity he became famous for. Personally I’ve been bored by his last few movies. The fat suits are played out and kid friendly comedies aren’t what made Mr. Murphy famous.
Well it looks like Eddie may be getting back to his comedic roots and may have a second chance at getting his swag back. According to Entertainment Weekly, Eddie will be playing legendary comedian Richard Pryor in an upcoming biopic written by Bill Condon.

Writer/director Bill Condon, who just completed his debut run as producer of the 2009 Academy Awards, is shopping his script Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? to the studio subsidiaries and independent distributors around town. Eddie Murphy is attached to star.

If you are movie buffs then you know the first time Eddie Murphy worked with writer-director Bill Condon he earned a nomination for best supporting actor at the Oscars. That was for playing a fictionalized version of singer James Brown in “Dreamgirls” back in 2006 (he lost to Alan Arkin, “Little Miss Sunshine”). Now the two are reuniting to make a movie about Murphy’s longtime idol — the late Richard Pryor.

Many of you may remember Eddie’s impersonations of Pryor in his classic 1987 stand up movie Raw.
Fox Searchlight, the studio behind this year’s big Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire, is interested in the film (a $25 Million dollar project). Eddie Murphy has long revered Richard Pryor, paying homage to him in his stand-up routines (such as 1987’s RAW) and casting Pryor in his directorial debut “Harlem Nights” in 1989. The life of the comic was fraught with drama — drug and alcohol abuse, broken marriages, illnesses — and could make for a powerful piece.

Just make us laugh like you used to or we want “HALF EDDIE!” But seriously I’m rooting for this movie. Maybe it will inspire Eddie to go back to stand-up. Stay stuck for more details on this upcoming movie.
