Yep hot off of the presses….looks like Beenie Wells is headed to the NFL. One part of me is happy because that is another athlete from my city Akron that is headed to the BIG GAME (Akron breeds stars baby!). Another part of me is concerned because OSU could’ve used Wells for another year, along with some other things. 10TV reported this earlier today.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two-time Ohio State MVP Chris “Beanie” Wells is entering his name into the 2009 NFL draft, the university’s athletic department announced Thursday.

In three seasons, Wells rushed for 3,382 yards, the fourth best in Ohio State history. The Akron native had 16 career games of 100 yards or more and scored 30 career touchdowns. Wells was named the team’s most valuable player in 2007 and 2008 and set the Ohio State-Michigan game rushing record with 222 yards in 2007.

In a statement issued by the university, Wells said his decision was difficult but he decided to enter the draft in the best interest of his family. For his statement

“I want to thank my teammates, my coaches, my teachers and the academic advisors for all they have done, and I definitely want to thank the Buckeye fans for all their support,” Wells said. “Ohio State has become like a family to me, and it will always be that way.”

Last month, Ohio State coach Tressel said that he would urge Wells to turn professional.

“Ohio State Football will miss Beanie’s big runs, but we will also miss his big smile,” Tressel said in a statement. “He has been a tremendous teammate and one of the all-time great performers in the greatest rivalry in college football. He will always be an ambassador for Ohio State and all of us wish him well.”

Wells suffered several injuries in his three-year Ohio State career, including a foot injury in the team’s 2008 opener against Youngstown State. Wells missed the team’s next three games. In Monday’s Fiesta Bowl loss against Texas, Wells suffered a concussion that kept him out of the game for most of the second half.

The NFL draft is scheduled for April 25-26 in New York City. Draft experts said that Wells is a sure first-round pick.
