College coach fired after NFL interview

The coaching game is pretty tough when you’re fired for even considering moving up.  Boston College head coach Jeff Jagodzinski was fired after attending an interview for the vacant New York Jets coaching postion. BC’s athletic director, Gene DeFilippo, sent Jagodzinski well wishes as he made him yet another currently out of work football coach.  “Today’s action relates to a difference of vision for the future.”

he was quoted as saying was a part of the reason the coach was let go.  DeFilippo has said that BC is looking for a coach to stay long term.  Obviously Jagodzinski even attending the interview makes it clear that he’s not their man.  Although the transition from college to the NFL is one that I think most coaches would consider I’m not sure why Jeff was so quick to risk this.  DeFilippo made it clear that if Jagodinski went through with the interview it would jeopordize his job and the fact that he’s only been a head coach for two years after a 22 year run as an assistant would’ve been shaky ground for me. Not for Jeff J, I guess confidence is key.

He does have a great resume’, having coached Brett Favre and Matt Hasselback, coaching in college footaball for 16 years and the pros for eight, I’m sure he’ll land on his feet.  I can’t help but to wonder if this will serve as a model for programs in the future to use as a scare tactic to keep coaches they don’t want to see leave.
