Calls maybe dropped during Obama Inauguration

National Mall

by Jamila Williams

Don’t expect to have much chit-chat going on during Barack Obama’s Jan. 20 Inauguration. With thousands of Americans expected to descend on the nation’s capital for the history making ceremony, cellular phone systems around the National Mall are expected to be overloaded. With such a record number of people expected to be using their cell phones all at the same time, phone calls, text messages, picture messages and video messages are expected to hit a wireless roadblock. Similar situations occur in New York’s Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Both Sprint and Verizon, the two main wireless carriers in the D.C.-metro area, are spending millions of dollars to add capacity to their cell sites ahead of Obama’s inauguration.
