TECH BYTES :: “Minority Report” interface and Computers that can record your dreams

Post by Big Yogi
You may have heard the famous quote that “Art imitates life” but as we progress to the future I am finding more and more examples of life imitating art. I remember when I was a kid and I would watch those sci-fi movies and I thought how cool would it be to have a skateboard that floated like ‘back to the future’ or one of those space aged cars that could drive themselves. For years those futuristic tales of robots, lasers, and unheard of technology fed our imaginations with the notions of “what if that really could happen?” Fast foward to 2008 and you can see that those days are upon us. Lexus’ can park themselves, Cell Phones can do just about anything including listening to music and telling you what the song is (still amazes me), and more kids will have computers than shoes by the year 2010.
So do sci-fi and futuristic movies give us a sign of what is to come? Do these directors have some sorta inside tips on what is out there or do they inspire the scientists to create new technology? However it occurs, it is obvious that some things you see in the movies will come to pass. What worries me is how far the imagination can go and what can happen if we create technology that we cannot control. We did some research (looked at some websites) and found some new technology that is inspired from some of the most popular sci-fi movies of our time. Be warned, this may disturb some of you.

MINORITY REPORT
If you don’t remember anything else from the movie ‘Minority Report’ you probably remember the dope computer interface that Tom Cruise was using in the movie. With the wave of a hand or twist of his wrist Tom navigated through a 3-D computer interface the size of the wall. It was a tech geek’s fantasy. Now that same technology can be yours for a small fortune. Oblong Industries is the developer of the g-speak spatial operating environment. The SOE’s combination of gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels brings the first major step in computer interface technology. The interface is handled with gloves and works with a 3-D style space. The producers say that this technology will become more and more integrated into our day to day lifestyles. BABYLON A.D.
The latest Vin Deisel Movie ‘Babylon A.D.’ finds Vin in a war torn, high-tech future, where technology and religion battle for supremacy. The climax of the movie occurs when half robot scientists, in search of a female human robot, connect computers to Vin’s head and send him into a deep sleep so they can record and display his dreams and memory to find her. Sounds like it could never happen right? Wrong. A research team at the ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories in Japan has successfully displayed simple images produced in the human brain on a computer screen. Dream recorder anyone?

Technology is useful and connects people in ways we never imagined but where do draw the line between science and morality. In the wrong hands we could just as well take ourselves out of existence.
