SPORTS :: Is The AFL Dead?
POST by K. Moreland
After plenty of reports, memos and press releases things are still unclear about whether or not the 2009 AFL season will take place. Several teams have reported the expectation that the season will be canceled. Players have agreed to pay cuts and a private equity firm has been contacted about investing. The league issued a statement not saying that the season would happen but that it had not yet been cancelled.
The New Orleans VooDoo, one of the league’s more notable teams, folded in October. The team was owned by Tom Benson, who also owns the New Orleans Saints. With the success of the NFL not seemingly affected by the current recession you have to wonder if Benson’s business savy pulled the VooDoo out just in time. For a league that’s only 21 years old a one season cancellation could be detrimental. Lets hope that if this decision is made the AFL will return financially intact and ready to entertain. The AFL season offers a welcome alternative for the die hard football fans during the NFL offseason. A final season cancellation decision should be made soon, the AFL season typically begins in late February.
