Crash Investigation
Police are trying to determine whether a man who crashed his car and shot himself this morning on the North Side is responsible for a bank robbery in Upper Arlington.
The man was taken to Ohio State University Medical Center, where he died, police said.
Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner identified the dead man as Corwin Head, 30. Police didn’t release an address, but Franklin County Municipal Court records show him living in Upper Arlington this year.
Upper Arlington and Columbus police are working together to determine what happened. By their account:
An alarm sounded at Fifth Third Bank, 2081 Henderson Rd., at 9:04 a.m., shortly after the bank opened. A masked gunman took money from a teller and placed it in a black bag.
He drove off in a small tan four-door car. Police were given a license-plate number and traced the car to a motel near Busch Boulevard and Rt. 161.
An unmarked police car was in the area, and an officer observed the car leaving the motel lot at 9:54 a.m. Marked cruisers took up pursuit as the car was westbound on Rt. 161.
The car knocked over a utility pole on the right side of the road and crashed into another pole on the northeast corner of Rt. 161 and Huntley Road. When officers approached, they saw that the lone occupant of the car had a gunshot wound.
Officers planned to obtain a search warrant after a gun and a black bag were seen in the car.
