Mayor Proclaims Michael Redd Day
(Columbus) Mayor Michael B. Coleman today declared September 5 Michael Redd Day in honor of the Columbus native who won a Gold Medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Redd was a member of the USA Men’s Basketball Team, which defeated Spain 118-107, returning the Olympic Gold Medal to the United States. Mayor Coleman presented a proclamation to Redd and his wife, Achea at City Hall today.
“There is no greater athletic achievement than to win an Olympic Gold Medal for your country,” Mayor Coleman said. “Here in Columbus we’re so proud of his accomplishments, not only on the basketball court, but in the community. Michael Redd is a hero both on and off the field.”
A graduate of Columbus’ West High School, Redd played for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 1998 to 2000, leading the team in scoring all three years. He still holds fifth place on OSU’s career points list. As a member of the Milwaukee Bucks, Redd was named to the 2004 NBA All Star team, holds the Bucks’ franchise record for points scored in a single game with 57 and is tenth on the team’s all-time scorer’s list.
Redd has remained active in the local community. He’s hosted a summer basketball camp for Ohio youth the past six years, helped to build the Philadelphia Deliverance Church of Christ on the East Side, and created the Michael Redd Foundation, a nonprofit organization that advocates for physical, mental, and spiritual health.
