In an all too familiar story, the state of Louisiana is once again facing a natural disaster. Hurricane Gustav is delivering high winds and heavy rain to the state, while residents and city officials bear down and hope for the best. The hurricane hit Louisiana as a Category 1 storm, a decrease from the initial Category 4 rating.

In an attempt to not repeat the tragedy of Katrina, government official evacuated nearly 2 million Louisiana residents, including residents of New Orleans. While the 110 mph winds are a downgrade from what was initially expected, the city of New Orleans is still under watch. The levees are only partially rebuilt after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, but city officials are confident that they will hold.

“We are seeing some overtopping waves,” said Col. Jeff Bedey, commander of the Corps’ hurricane protection office. “We are cautiously optimistic and confident that we won’t see catastrophic wall failure.”

Our prayers are with all of those being affected by Hurricane Gustav.
