A French court has ordered EBay to pay 38.6 euros (60.8 million USD) in damages to French luxury goods maker LVMH a.k.a. Moet Hennessy Louis Vitton after a long legal battle over the sale of fake goods on the website. This is the second challenge by LVMH to the site, arguing that a whopping 90% of their goods sold there are fake!! Ebay, according to the court is not doing enough to “stamp out counterfeit sales.”

In a statement EBay says that “the case went beyond countefeiting to include manufacturers proscribing the territories in which its products can be sold… It’s about an attempt by LVMH to protect uncompetitive commercial practices at the expense of consumer choice and the livelihood of law-abiding sellers that EBay empowers every day. We will fight this ruling on their behalf.” In response to this and other lawsuits EBay has changed its auction practices by implementing more regulations, such as eliminating one-day auctions on luxury goods and clothing and preventing sellers in Hong Kong and China from listing luxury items at all. EBay has already been ordered to pay $20K to Hermes International and has a pending suit with Tiffany & Company.  These companies don’t play about the authenticity of what they do…. Nobody wants to be undercut- You gotta respect that!
