It’s international film festival time here at the Flypaper so we’re bringing a new segment called “THE RELEASE” which is your ticket to all of the hottest new movies whether they’re blockbusters, cult classics, or underground gems. These are some movies you must see.
After completing the critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated 2002 feature CITY OF GOD and the critically acclaimed multi-part TV series, CITY OF MEN, filmmakers Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund are back with the DVD release of ‘CITY OF MEN’, the full length movie.
WATCH, DISCUSS, and GET THIS MOVIE!
Continuing the stories from a notorious slum (or what they call a ‘favela’) in Brazil, the movie follows Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) and Acerola (Douglas Silva), two teens from Rio de Janeiro. With their eighteenth birthdays fast approaching, Laranjinha sets out to find the father he never met, while Acerola struggles to raise his own young son. But when they suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war, the lifelong friends are forced to confront a shocking secret from their shared past.
For all of the ‘CITY OF GOD’ fans and fans of the ‘CITY OF MEN’ series here is some useful information. If your looking for the story to pick up where City of God left off, think again. The characters and the story have zero to do with the movie City of God. City of God took place in the 1970s and City of Men takes place today. Although many of the actors were featured in the City of God movie, the storylines have nothing to do with each other. I’d recommend that you watch the TV show, which is available on DVD, before watching the movie. The first movie is crazy and even if you don’t like subtitles, the movie instantly draws you in and next thing you know you don’t even think about the subtitles. This collection is definitely a must have.
