Ohio Kindergartener in a “Hairy” situation

6yhr old w/ mohawk

Post by T Cole

Michelle Barile was outraged when she learned that her 6 year old son, Bryan Ruda (pictured above) was suspended from Parma Community School for wearing a mohawk haircut.  She understands that there is a dress code, but states that nothing in the school’s handbook prohibiting the hairstyle.  She states that this incident is “total discrimination… they can’t tell me how I can cut his hair.”

School administrators in the Cleveland suburb state that Barile was warned last fall, and again at a later date.  They state that Bryan’s haircut is disruptive, and violates the school’s policy of being properly groomed.  They also state that the school district’s dress code allows school officials to forbid anything that “interferes with the conduct of education”.  Which must be left to interpretation…. Barile is not conforming and is moving Bryan to another school.

Bryan Ruda’s hair is not long, it’s not spiked, it is simply close shaven on the sides.  Is it disruptive to other students?  Where should the line be drawn in school administation’s power to enforce dress code??  You tell us.
