THE 50TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS, WRAPPED UP FLY STYLE

Despite ongoing controversy, and threats of picket lines being present, the 2008 Grammy Awards aired Sunday evening. If you weren’t lucky enough to have four hours of downtime to watch the awards, then go grab a snack, as I give my run down of the high and low points of the night in another highly anticipated wrap story.
This year marked the 50th anniversary for the Grammy’s. In order to celebrate this milestone, the producers lined up a multitude of unforgettable collaborations that merged the old with the new. The first performance that grabbed my attention was a duet with Morris Day and the Time and Rhianna. Yes, you heard that right. Morris was dressed in a leftover suit from the 80’s, complete with the slicked back hair, and a mirror on stage. Rhianna looked gorgeous, and added a new school flavor to the performance.
Other big name collaborations included Little Richard (who pulled off the puppet look flawlessly) and Jerry Lee Lewis, Alicia Keys and John Mayer, and Fergie and John Legend. The most anticipated duet of the night, and definitely one of my favorite moments of the show, was that of Beyonce and Tina Turner. They both looked absolutely FABULOUS, as they brought the house down while performing “Proud Mary.” Their performance was so great that I’m not even going to mention the fact that B stepped on Tina’s foot. Oops.

Not to be shown up, those that took the stage solo also gave memorable performances. A glow-in-the dark Kanye West performed an outstanding tribute to his mother that had the entire audience in tears. Really, I even cried. Amy Whinehouse (who performed via satellite after her Visa was denied!) also gave a controversial performance. In addition to shouting out her incarcerated husband, she also appeared to be going through crack withdrawal, as she jerked around the stage doing movements that can only be compared to those of Pookie in “New Jack City.”
The night was full of big winners and some big surprises too. Amy Winehouse won five awards, including Record of the Year. With such a powerful voice, I am hoping that these wins give her the motivation to get clean. I would hate for her to continue being referred to as Amy Crackhouse. Rhianna also took home an award for her hit,” Umbrella.” She even managed to get Jay-Z on stage with her to accept the award, in a moment that added a little more fuel to those rumors about the nature of their relationship. Kayne West won in four out of the eight categories that he was nominated for. For once he seemed genuine and humbled, but did have a Kayne moment when the band hit the “Wrap it up Box” during his acceptance speech. As he dedicated an award to his mother, West firmly stated that “it would probably be in good taste” for the band to stop playing. This time he was right, and he got have his moment. The big shocker of the night was Album of the Year, which went to Herbie Hancock. I found myself thoroughly disappointed that I stayed up late to see the winner of this category. Just about every other nominee in this category shared my confused look, with the exception of Amy Winehouse who looked confused the entire night.
Overall the night was one full of amazing performances, and unforgettable moments. For a show that almost didn’t happen, I would have to give the Grammy’s an A.
